Who is in the cast of Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series?

The highly anticipated Netflix adaptation of the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series has finally hit the streaming service.

In 2022, the cast for the series was revealed which included:

  • Gordon Cormier as Aang
  • Kaiwentiio as Katara
  • Ian Ousley as Sokka
  • Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko
  • Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai
  • Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Uncle Iroh
  • Elizabeth Yu as Princess Azula

Additionally, Casey Camp-Horinek, Maria Zhang, A Martinez, Yvonne Chapman, and others are set to make appearances throughout the series.

Showrunner expressed the importance of keeping the cast true to the character on the show.

“A live-action version would establish a new benchmark in representation and bring in a whole new generation of fans,” Kim wrote."

Additionally, he said this is "a chance to showcase Asain and Indigenous characters as living, breathing people.

"Not just in cartoon, but in a world that truly exists, very similar to the one we live in."

What has the executive producer said about the cast?

Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the creators of Avatar which first aired on Nickelodeon in 2005, stepped away from the Netflix series in 2020.

DiMartino and Konietzko said they found they "couldn’t control the creative direction of the series," and therefore decided to remove themselves from the show.

However, in a letter to fans, DiMartino wrote: “Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar has the potential to be good. It might turn out to be a show many of you end up enjoying.

“But what I can be certain about is that whatever version ends up on-screen, it will not be what Bryan and I had envisioned or intended to make.”

The live-action remake will be created by Albert Kim who is the showrunner, executive producer, and writer of the Netflix series.

Kim revealed he knew casting would be the most difficult decision to make.

Speaking with , Kim said: "We always knew that casting this show was going to be probably the biggest challenge of them all because you're asking a hell of a lot from some very young performers.

"And I always knew that we wanted to be age appropriate in our casting. We did not want to cast a 20-year-old to play a 12-year-old. We needed a 12-year-old to play a 12-year-old.

"And so, that was a tall order when it came to casting. But it was one of those things where sometimes lightning just strikes. You see someone, and you realize they've somehow captured the essence of a character."

He also revealed that Aang was the hardest to cast saying: "So it's a very different version of Aang if you had a 15-year-old Aang as opposed to a 10-year-old Aang.

"So again, Gordon just nailed that sweet spot. He was really 12 when we cast him, and he's playing a 12-year-old."
