Parents of Brit, 18, killed in avalanche on Swiss Alps during school ski trip ‘devastated’ as classmate still missing

THE parents of a British teenager killed in an avalanche on the Swiss Alps during a school trip have been left "devastated".

Archie Harvey, 18, was found dead after he was swept away by the snowslide in Meiringen, Bern, while his classmate remains missing.

Archie - the son of property developer Philip Harvey and designer Sarah Metcalfe - was living in Switzerland and attending the exclusive £57,000-a-year Ecole d'Humanité international school.

He previously went to school in the UK and lived with his parents at their £2 million property in Kensington, West London, reports the .

Archie was part of a group of seven students from the Swiss boarding school caught in a horrifying 50ft avalanche on Wellhorn Mountain on March 21.

He was swept away and rescue crews later found his body after an extensive search.

Cops received a report at around 4.25pm that "an avalanche had fallen near the Gstelliwang and two ski tourers had been buried". 

The other stricken skier, a female student from the US, has yet to be found.

A family friend told the Mail: "Phillip and Sarah are devastated, Archie's death has crushed them."

The students were on a ski tour with a mountain guide, a youth and sports leader, and three other external individuals when the devastating avalanche struck.

In a statement, the school said the group was "very experienced" and had "taken the necessary precautions for a ski tour in advance".

It added: "We regret this terrible accident and are deeply saddened.

"We extend our heartfelt condolences and sympathy to all students, their families and relatives.

"A care team was available for the students of Ecole d'Humanité and furthermore professionals are available for psychological care and individual grief counselling."

Archie's funeral took place in Switzerland two weeks ago.

The Gstelliwang is a ski slope on the Wellhorn mountain in the Bernese Alps.

Meanwhile, six people were swept to their deaths in a horror avalanche in the French Alps on Sunday.

The victims were tragically caught up in the snow as it tumbled down the Armancette glacier near Mont Blanc in south-eastern France.

The snowslide, with a reported height of 1,600m and a width of 500m, ploughed into skiers shortly before 11.30am.

Authorities said "three groups of skiers" each "supervised by one or two mountain guides" were caught up in the deadly avalanche.
