Toyota Supra is lighter, faster and stiffer than sports car rivals — but the first-year allocation is nearly sold out

TWENTY-three years. Twenty-three L-O-O-O-O-N-G years.

That’s how much time has passed since Toyota axed the Supra in 1996.

A baby born back then could have a seven-year-old child of their own by now.

But rejoice. The Supra is back as a 340hp, three-litre, rear-drive, two-seater coupe looking as fit as a butcher’s dog.

It goes like stink too. Toyota quotes 0-62mph in 4.3 seconds, putting it right in the mix with the Porsche Cayman S, BMW M2 Competition and Alpine A110, all of which I’d have tomorrow. So the signs are good.

Of course, the Supra is half-sister to the BMW Z4. All the hardware started life at BMW but Toyota has made the Supra lighter, faster and stiffer. And the Z4 is a drop-top, the Supra isn’t.

The cabin is a copy-and-paste job but that’s fine because the Z4 is class and Toyota’s poster hero is back. Without each other they wouldn’t exist.
